Gabrielle Union Just Wore Spring-Perfect Wedge Thong Sandals

This past weekend, I spent the day bundled up underneath my cozy blanket binging Netflix shows with a warm cup of peppermint tea by my side; outside, it was snowy (nay, blizzarding), and I was not in the mood to leave the comfort of my couch. So, I didn’t. But, at one point, I had to — and while I moaned and groaned at the thought of stepping out the door, I knew things wouldn’t be that bad because my winter boots would save the day. They’re all I’ve been wearing the past few months, so imagine how shocked I was when I saw Gabrielle Union in an anti-winter shoe recently.

Union was out and about during London Fashion Week, and by the looks of her outfit, you’d think it was already spring. Honestly, I wasn’t mad about it, because I cannot wait for the season of flowers, sunshine, and warmer temps to drop. But, the fact that it just snowed in NYC over the weekend was a rude awakening — it's not quite the time yet, but at least I get to live vicariously through Union’s spring-perfect outfit that consisted of a colorful, floral-print midi dress with an asymmetric hem and a totally open back (so sexy!). She paired the spring-y number with a pastel yellow shoulder bag and the most unexpected shoes for this time of year: blue, croc-embossed thong wedges

As you’d expect, thong sandals are a total shocker this time of year — especially if you live on the East Coast. It’s cold, so keeping your toes covered is an absolute must, and because of that, sandals of any kind simply haven’t been on my mind. But alas, Union’s look reawakened my excitement for the warm-weather shoe, so much so that I’m stocking up on some styles now so that I am adequately prepared once the time comes to wear them. In fact, I’m eyeing this Vince pair that looks equal parts sexy and edgy, thanks to the buckle strap that offers a fresh take on the footwear.

Before you say it, yes, I know that thong sandals are controversial. The throwback shoe, which many people love to hate, is clearly due for big things in 2024, and Union’s sighting is the first piece of proof. In years past, we also saw a slew of celebs step out in the style, from Kendall Jenner to Hailey Bieber; we even deemed fancy flip-flops the “it” shoe of the season last summer. Clearly, the footwear with that divisive front strap is holding its ground, so I say instead of hating on it, get in on it — in a stylish way, of course. (And thong wedges are the most stylish version, IMO.)
