G-Dragon’s letter “G” is adapted from the English pronunciation of “Ji”, the first syllable of his surname Ji-Yong, while “Dragon” is the English translation of “Yong”.
G Dragon was born as Kwon Ji-Yong on August 18, 1988, in Seoul, capital of South Korea. The singer was born to his parents Han Gi-ran and Kwon Young Hwan. Growing up, he attended Korean Traditional Arts Middle and High School in Seoul. After graduating from high school, he studied postmodern music at Kyung University, but dropped out along the way. He then enrolled in Gukje Cyber University and received his bachelor’s degree in 2013. He earned his master’s degree in content and retail distribution from Sejong University.
At the age of 6, he started making music and joined a young music group called Little Roo’ra. The band broke up soon after their contract with their record company was closed, right after the release of a Christmas album. Dong Young-bae later changed her stage name to Taeyang and Choi also changed to TOP.
The group was officially unveiled on TV, but right before its first performance, Jang Hyun-Seung was kicked out of the group, leaving the group with five members. They later renamed themselves Big Bang. Since then, the band has enjoyed great success and is known to be one of South Korea’s most beloved and influential bands.
